Schottel GmbH, founded in 1921 by Josef Becker, is a German company that specializes in the development and production of propulsion systems for ships and offshore applications. The company is best known for its innovative Schottel Rudderpropeller (SRP), a propulsion system that combines propulsion and steering functions into a single unit.

The history of Schottel propulsion can be traced back to the early 1950s when the company introduced its first azimuth thruster, known as the Schottel Twin Propeller (STP). This system featured two fixed-pitch propellers mounted on a steerable pod, allowing for 360-degree manoeuvrability. The STP gained popularity in the shipping industry for its exceptional manoeuvring capabilities, especially in vessels operating in confined spaces such as harbors and rivers.

Building upon the success of the STP, Schottel continued to innovate and refine its propulsion systems. In the late 1950s, the company introduced the Schottel Rudderpropeller (SRP), which integrated the propellers and the steering function into a single unit. The SRP design allowed for even greater manoeuvrability and efficiency, and it became the flagship product of Schottel.

These include the Schottel Pump-Jet, a water-jet propulsion system used primarily in high-speed vessels, as well as the Schottel Combi Drive (SCD), a hybrid propulsion system combining a diesel engine with an electric motor for increased efficiency.
